The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree, as a liberal arts degree, prepares students for a variety of careers in every sector of the professional world. Depending upon the minor field of study and areas of emphasis, students can expect to enter careers in education, government, human and protective services, non-profit management, social work and counseling, management, marketing, finance, law, or religious ministry. Because interdisciplinary studies program advisors have been stressing to students the value of completing multiple minors, in particular ones that suggest a complementary set of skills and knowledge, many of our graduates are now presenting to prospective employers a diversified professional portfolio that highlights their preparation for and ability to adapt to changes in the job market. This degree is offered both in-person and 100% online. Online courses are offered in eight-week sessions at an accelerated pace, and with the same professors as on-campus courses.
The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree serves as a viable path for direct entry into employment or graduate study. Recently we have seen a substantial number of interdisciplinary studies graduates return to Nicholls to work on alternative certification for teaching through the Master of Arts in Teaching degree program. Graduates of our interdisciplinary studies program have also entered directly into law school or master’s programs in library and information science, social work, counseling, education, English, psychology, and religious ministry.
Below is a sampling of some of the occupations that previous graduates of our program have entered. Please note that some of these occupations, such as religious ministry, may require post-graduate education.
